why one book a month one book. fine dining.
the buffet

Rush from dish to dish, taste everything, experience nothing. You leave full — but you couldn't describe a single thing you ate. Over time, the tastes all merge into one. Each meal was rushed, nothing was savoured — and eventually, food itself becomes boring. Not because there's nothing good left, but because you've lost the ability to taste it.

fine dining

One dish arrives. The chef spent days thinking about it — the texture, the temperature, the balance. You slow down. You notice things. Your senses sharpen. The more carefully you pay attention to this dish, the better equipped you are to truly appreciate the next one. Over time, you develop the ability to tell the difference between ingredients, recognise where a dish comes from, understand why a chef made each choice — and eventually, start making your own.

The goal isn't to read as many books as possible. It's to understand one book deeply — to notice what the author did deliberately, feel what they wanted you to feel, and articulate why it works. That takes time. That's why we read one book a month.
